Flying Flags Location

Flying Flags has two locations – one in Avila Beach and one in Buellton by Solvang. We stayed at the Avila Beach location which is just a short drive north of Pismo Beach.

The location is one of the biggest perks of staying at this RV resort! All of the accommodations offer views of the Pacific Ocean and you’ll be just a 5-minute walk from the local beaches.

Compared to the nearby Pismo Beach, Avila Beach is a quiet town with a small downtown area and a few restaurants. It has a much more secluded, private feel but there is still plenty to do on a quick weekend getaway.

The Accommodations

Bungalow at Flying Flags Avila Beach

Flying Flags RV Resort & Campground has a variety of accommodations including cottages, glamping tents, RV sites, and tent sites.

On our visit, we stayed in the cottage. This is a standalone cabin with its own bathroom, bedroom, and living room. We have a 4-month-old baby so having a room with an AC, fridge, and running water was a must.

Inside Flying Flags Avila Beach cottage

The cottage came with excellent amenities including a fridge, coffee maker, TV, AC, and a bathroom with Malin + Goetz toiletries. The bungalows have their own private entrances and are separated from the neighboring cottages with tall walls for privacy.

Our cabin had incredible views of the ocean from the patio. It also featured a cozy outdoor fire pit for hanging out in the evenings. Overall, it’s a great choice for couples for a relaxing stay on the coast.

My favorite part of the stay was how dog-friendly this resort was. Our room included a dog welcome kit with bowls, a small doggie bed, towels, and a treat for our fur baby.

Flying Flags Campground

If you’re more into camping, the property also has a variety of campsites to choose from for various budgets. A few of the camping options include:

  • Glamping tents called Jupes (these are not pet-friendly)
  • Full hookup RV sites
  • Dry RV camping
  • Car camping sites
  • Bike in sites
RV site at the Flying Flags Avila Beach campground.

Each of the campsites comes with unobstructed ocean views so camping doesn’t get better than this on the Central Coast! The campsites feature picnic tables and gas fire pits so you don’t need to worry about bringing any wood.

The property is beautifully maintained and well taken care of. There are clean restrooms and hot showers for campers to use.

Avila Beach Flying Flags Amenities

Outdoor seating with ocean views at the resort.

Flying Flags RV Resort has a variety of on-property amenities to make your stay enjoyable!

The resort features a welcome center with an adjacent outdoor space with yard games and oceanfront lounge chairs. There are also community fire pits where you can cozy up with a glass of wine in the evenings while watching the sunset.

This resort is very dog friendly and there were plenty of dog waste stations set up throughout the property. There is also an outdoor dog shower where you can rinse your pup off after the beach.

Food & Drinks

While Flying Flags RV Park does not offer any food and drinks on the property, there are a few places to eat within a short walk from the resort. You can also drive to the nearby downtown Avila Beach for more dining options.

I highly recommend stocking up on everything you may need before heading into Avila. There isn’t a grocery store in Avila Beach and the closest grocery stores are located in Pismo Beach about a 20-minute drive from the property.

The closest restaurants from the resort are Fat Cats Café and Mersea’s Seafood Restaurant at the end of the Harford Pier. You can either drive there or walk within 15 minutes.

Downtown Avila has more restaurants, but parking here can be a bit difficult to find. We stopped at Kravabowl in Avila for breakfast acai bowls before heading out to explore the area.

Beach Access

Our pup running around at Olde Port Beach.

Flying Flags Avila Beach is situated just steps from the beach with incredible views of the Pacific Ocean. The hotel has paved roads that you can take down to the beach where you can walk along the shoreline.

The two closest beaches are Fisherman’s Beach and Olde Port Beach. Fisherman’s Beach does not allow dogs so we walked to Olde Port Beach instead where dogs are allowed to run around off-leash.

You will need to walk along Avila Beach Drive for a bit until you find an access point down to the beach. There are many RVs parked along this road and there is no side walk so be sure to keep an eye on passing cars.

Things To Do Nearby

Flying Flags Avila Beach is located near beaches, hiking trails, and is just a short drive from Pismo Beach.

Here are some of the top things to do during your stay:

Harford Pier

Mersea’s Seafood Restaurant at Harford Pier

Harford Pier is located just a 15-minute walk from the resort. This is a wooden pier where many people come for a walk in the evenings or to dine at the Mersea’s Seafood Restaurant situated at the end of it.

Harford Pier is one of the few piers in California that allows cars so you can drive across it in your personal vehicle. It also serves as a departure point for whale-watching tours, kayaking adventures, and other water activities in the area.

Shell Beach Bluff Trail

View of the Pacific Ocean from Shell Beach Bluff Trail in Avila Beach.

Ontario Ridge to Shell Beach Bluff Trail is a scenic hike in Avila Beach that offers excellent views of the ocean. This hike is only 3 miles long so it’s great for a quick nature escape on the California Coast.

The hike starts at the Pirate’s Cove Beach Parking Lot. If you’re not sure where to go, follow the Ontario Ridge To Shell Beach Bluff Trail Loop route on the AllTrails hiking app to stay on track.

This hike offers excellent views of Avila Beach, rugged ocean cliffs, the surrounding mountains and even features a secret swing along the way!

Smugglers Cave

Smugglers Cave

Smugglers Cave is a unique natural formation just a short walk from Pirate’s Cove Beach Parking Lot. At this location, you can walk through a large cave and see views of rugged ocean cliffs on the other side of it.

Avila Valley Barn Pismo Beach

Avila Valley Barn is one of the top things to do in the area with kids! We like to stop by Avila Valley Barn to grab a BBQ sandwich, ice cream and walk around the farm where you can see different animals.

Here you can purchase a head of lettuce and feed some of the barn animals including pygmy goats, cows, alpacas, donkeys, and more!

Downtown Avila Beach

Downtown Avila Beach

Nestled between lush mountains and the coast, downtown Avila Beach is a wonderful place to spend a few hours while visiting this area. Here you can go on a leisurely stroll while stopping at quaint boutique shops selling sweets, souvenirs, beachwear, and local artwork.

Downtown Avila Beach also has a few restaurants from casual beachside bites to upscale seafood restaurants. A few of the most popular restaurants in town are:
