Ojai is one of the coziest towns in Central California located just a short drive north of Ventura. With exceptional restaurants, affordable and luxury hotels, beautiful landscapes, and wineries there is plenty to do here on a weekend trip!

On my latest visit, I stayed at the recently renovated Hummingbird Inn which is a great low-key hotel option for visitors. This 3-star Inn is situated off East Ojai Avenue in a secluded location while also being within walking distance of the buzzing city center shops and restaurants.

The Hummingbird Inn Rooms

Inside my room at the Ojai Hummingbird Inn

The Hummingbird Inn has cozy, updated accommodations that are perfect for a quick trip or a weekend getaway! The hotel is nestled near the mountains with beautiful views of the surrounding lush hills from the property.

The rooms are simple yet upgraded with tile floors, mid-century modern furniture, and comfortable bedding. The accommodations are very spacious and feature chic touches.

The Inn has a Spanish-style exterior with twining flowers throughout the hotel grounds. There are outdoor chairs set up on the second level where you can enjoy a cup of coffee in the morning.

The rooms have a simple, private bathroom with a tub and a shower, sink, microwave, and a mini fridge that is great for storing leftovers and snacks. The rooms come with a tea kettle but coffee and tea do cost extra ($4 for in-room coffee and $2 for in-room tea).

For my stay, I booked a king room, but you can also opt for a queen room, a room with a patio, or a more secluded bungalow away from the main building. For more space, book the King Suite which comes with a cozy lounging area and a couch.

Hotel Amenities

Free bike rentals at Ojai Hummingbird Inn

The hotel is located on the east end of Ojai Avenue away from the busy downtown while still being within walking or biking distance. Hummingbird Inn offers complimentary bike rentals so you can explore the area without needing to look for parking (which can be hard to find in downtown).

Hummingbird Inn is a no-frills, budget-conscious stay so the amenities are a bit limited. Along with the pool, the hotel features a plush indoor lounge with lots of plants where you can work or enjoy the cozy fireplace in the evenings.

Guests can enjoy complimentary coffee and tea in the mornings in the common lounge or bring it back to the room in to-go cups.

The Pool

On warmer summer days, you can enjoy relaxing by the beautiful outdoor pool that is heated to a comfortable 80 degrees. Situated in an enclosed area surrounded by lush trees, the pool was one of my favorite parts of staying at the Hummingbird Inn!

The pool area features comfy lounge chairs and a fire pit that is a wonderful place to gather around with friends and family in the evenings.

Pet Policy

If you’re looking for a hotel in Ojai that accepts dogs, Hummingbird Inn is a great option! The hotel has pet-friendly rooms with small enclosed patios so you can bring your furry friends along on your trip.

There is a small, grassy area in front of the hotel with pet stations and doggie bags for their bathroom needs. The pet fee is $40 per night per dog with a maximum of 2 dogs (no cats allowed).

What To Do In Ojai

Ojai is a popular getaway for California tourists and locals alike. It’s a wonderful place to go for a quick escape without having to travel far!

We live in Ventura County so we love to come here for weekend trips to spend the day browsing through charming boutique shops, enjoy a lunch, and craft activities like pottery lessons.

Downtown Ojai

Ojai’s downtown is walkable and has a lot of cute restaurants, cafes, and wine bars. Most of the businesses are conveniently located along the main road that passes through the town.

If you plan to travel with your kids, I highly recommend stopping by Libbey Park which has a large kids playground, walking pathways, and even an old Ojai City jail historical landmark!

Dining

Delicious lunch at Ojai Rottie

When visiting Ojai, I always try to stop by Ojai Rottie for lunch – one of my favorite places to dine in town.

I love the Rôtie Chicken with caramelized cauliflower and roasted potatoes along with avgolemono soup and baklava for dessert. On a hot day, I recommend the Syrian mint black tea and fresh melon water & rosewater which are very refreshing!

The plates have a great mix of flavors and spices that complement each other. The soup comes with freshly baked bread – their specialty that you can also get to go. The flavor combinations are just mouthwatering!

A few other popular places to eat in town include:

Pottery Lessons

Pottery lessons are such a fun and relaxing activity to do on a trip to Ojai.

Ojai is famous for being a thriving arts community on the Central California Coast. Within the town, you’ll find multiple art studios and you can even part-take in making your own pottery!

Taking a pottery workshop is a wonderful activity for couples, families, and friends. I’ve done this workshop myself and had a great time creating pots and cups on a spinning wheel with the help of experienced instructors.

This 2-hour workshop is long enough to make a few good pieces with an option to return later to glaze them.

Ventura River Preserve

Ventura-River-Preserve-Trail
Beautiful mountain scenery at the Ventura River Preserve in Ojai.

If you’re looking for something outdoorsy to do on your visit, Ventura River Preserve is the perfect place to go biking, hiking, and horseback riding. Located on the outskirts of Ojai, this nature preserve covers 1600 acres of land with multiple trail options.

The 3-mile-long Ventura River Preserve Trail has very little elevation gain so it is a great hiking route for first-time visitors. This trail offers the opportunity to feel submerged in nature just a short drive from the nearby cities.

If you plan to hike the Ventura River Preserve Trail in the summer, be sure to bring plenty of water as this area can be very hot and exposed to the sun. On the other hand, after a recent rainfall, you may need to cross the river multiple times so waterproof hiking shoes are a must!

I always recommend checking the latest reviews on the AllTrails hiking app for weather conditions before heading out there.

Soule Park Golf Course

Hummingbird Inn is located across the street from the award-winning Soule Park Golf Course with stunning views of the surrounding mountains.

If you just want to visit this location for the views, the onsite Zaidee’s Bar & Grill has an excellent food & drink menu for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

Hummingbird Inn offers a great value accommodation option at the heart of Ojai town! This recently renovated hotel is a wonderful low-key getaway for couples and smaller families.
