Pizza Barn Review – Budget Friendly Pizzas In Kernville

Pizza Barn is the local “go-to” pizza spot in Kernville, a small mountain town located on the outskirts of Lake Isabella.

We arrived at Lake Isabella late on a Friday night for a quick weekend getaway from Bakersfield. After spending over an hour driving in our car we were tired, hungry and just wanted to find a quick bite to eat before calling it a night.

Lake Isabella is surrounded by a few very small towns so the food choices here were pretty limited. After a quick Google search, I came across Pizza Barn in Kernville, a local “mom and pop” eatery that is one of the highest-rated restaurants around. Even our Airbnb hosts had Pizza Barn on top of their recommendation list. Plus it was only a few minutes drive from our Airbnb rental so we decided to give it a go.

Trying out local Kernville beers at Pizza Barn

The Atmosphere

Pizza Barn was open late and had a patio with outdoor seating which was an important factor for us so we could bring our dog. We were visiting Lake Isabella in the winter and it was chilly outside but thankfully Pizza Barn had a few heaters set up to keep us warm.

Pizza Barn restaurant itself is very casual and has open seating with long family-style tables. Their menu is displayed on a giant billboard above the counter which is where customers can place their orders. After ordering you can take a seat – when your food is ready, it will be brought out to your table.

The Menu

Most of the Pizza Barn plates go for around $10 per person.

Their menu consists of pizzas, pastas, sandwiches, salads, calzones and other Italian comfort plates. If you want to grab a beer, they have a few draft choices on tap including a couple of local beers from Kern River Brewing Company down the street. I tried the Kern River Brewing IPA for only $4 a pint.

The wings were our favorite!

Get The Wings

For our dinner, we started off with the wings appetizer which cost only $5.95 – one of the cheapest restaurant items we’ve ordered lately.

We asked for the wings well done (we prefer them extra crunchy). We got 8 wings in our order and they came out super crispy and had a nice flavor. The wings came served with buffalo and BBQ sauce on the side so we could dip them in. But the wings themselves had such a great flavor that I barely used either of the sauces.

The Pizza

For our main dish, we decided to split a pizza. But this is where we kind of messed up. We ordered their buffalo pizza and looking back I wish we had stuck to something more basic like pepperoni or veggie.

Pizza Barn’s Buffalo Pizza

The buffalo pizza came with lots of stringy cheese that felt like overkill and the pizza was topped with deep-fried chicken pieces instead of just regular grilled chicken. Our buffalo pizza had no veggie toppings which would have been nice to balance out the fried chicken flavor.

Overall the buffalo pizza felt a bit greasy and like something you’d eat in college when you’re hungover. We were not fans of it and looking back through hundreds of google reviews I only saw one other photo of it posted online – probably for a reason.

BUT with that said, the pizza dough was super fresh, soft and very delicious. I would definitely come back and try one of their other pizzas or balance out the pizza with a side salad.

Overall from our experience at Pizza Barn, the wings were delicious, the beer was cheap and it was one of the few places around that was open late.
